“these butterflies were produced by a neural network i trained on lithographs from the Biologia Centrali-Americana, an encyclopaedia of the natural history of Central America from the late 19th century. in that time period, an antiquated perspective of cataloguing, owning, and knowing was prevalent, as if the whole world had already been discovered. in the way that neural networks seek not to catalogue but to generate and interpolate, this neural network signifies a new paradigm of exploring, generating, and discovering.”
